Rear suspension shimmed and fitted and down on its wheels for the first time in 3 years :) engine fitted, radiator fitted, pedals and master cylinders fitted, oil cooler fitted and found out what I need to do to make the lines fit. Next up is waiting for bits for my clutch mechanism and then fit the gearbox, then test-fit propshaft and get it balanced :) oh, and annoyingly my exhaust manifold needs modification to fit. But hey, progress!

Impressive, looking back at what you started with. When do you suppose it will be ready for MOT and whatever else is needed to get it road legal?

Intake/bonnet clearance issues sorted at this point? Can’t recall. One of our US TV shows had a mk. IV on it last night, so my dad and I were explaining Spits to my mom. I then detailed the Spit6 to my dad, and he seems to think you’re quite mad. :)

... he seems to think you’re quite mad.
That’s got to be a compliment coming from your father.

Wow, amazing progress! Always good seeing a car back on it’s wheels.

Should be when it’s done! Aiming for 170bhp/200lb-ft and 750kg :) we’ll see how close I can get, but that should put it on par with an E46 M3 :)

Oh yeah that was one of the happy coincidences to shifting the engine back 6" to try and sort exhaust clearance. Plenty of space for angled intakes too (although I’ve still got to work out if my bundle of snakes long-tube inlet will work).
Haha I definitely take that as a compliment ;)

Yeah it’s finally starting to look impressive when I bolt stuff on, rather than most of the welding where you do a ton of work and it looks basically the same ;)

A little more of the less at this point, but not as far as you’d think! The list for MoT goes:
- finish filling and paint
- clutch mechanism
- fit gearbox
- balance prop
- reseal front brakes and build rears
- plumb brake lines
- plumb fuel lines
- tweak exhaust manifold
- fabricate exhaust
- plumb cooling and heater
- put together injection system
- fit steering rack
- fit gauges
- fit seat and seatbelt
- fit bonnet, boot and doors
- fit windscreen and perspex rear window
- get engine running and bed it in

What do you plan on doing with it when you do finally get it done?
Track? Going to the shops? DD? Build another shed to put it in and moving on to the next project?

All of the above ;)
I’m aiming towards it being on the road for the Europpomeet in March which is a pretty tall order but just about doable I think :) from then occasional daily driver use while I build another shed and start pottering about building the MG Baja probably :)

Thanks! Yeah it’s getting to the point where each little bit of work done is very visible :) I’ll soon run out of stuff to procrastinate from filling though so it’ll be back to that in a bit...

Hey, OT but was it you who shipped a few Euro cars over to the US? I’ve been considering doing something similar and thought you might have some pointers.
Were you shipping in containers, or roll-on/roll-off?

I have, yes. It’s been a while though and I haven’t done so professionally. I used the RoRo Port of Emden, Germany.
I don’t fully recall where you’re from, was it the UK? Flavien, the guy on Oppo who’s shipping all those JDM cars from Japan to the US and Europe noted Southampton as his preferred British port. I’m confident he’s far more experienced and knowledgeable than I am.
Also, assuming you are from the RHD part of Europe, if you need a LHD car, let me know.

Haha luckily it’s a big cast-iron boat anchor so would probably do quite well in a gravity racer ;)

I’m from the UK, but I’m looking at the possibility of shipping cars from the Caribbean to either the US or UK. Lots of weird old Japanese stuff that could conceivably be worth shipping a few k miles. And lots of small >25y/o pickups around, JDM-as-f-yo, for the US market.
In your experience, how much would you say a car needs to be worth as a minimum before it’s worth shipping?
